It is thanks to several former members of the Royal Hong Kong Police, that I can come up with some highly interesting information about the Haflinger history in this small country - Thank you for your help! The Royal Hong Kong Police bought around six Haflingers in the late 60s and used them in remote areas such as Lantao Island and along the Chinese border in the New Territories (for example one was in service at the Ta Ku Ling Station).

Die Royal Hong Kong Police beschaffte Ende der 60er ungefähr sechs Haflinger, die in eher entlegenen Gebieten wie Lantao Island und entlang der Grenze zu China in den New Territories zum Einsatz kamen.

The Police was also experimenting with a water cannon mounted on a Haflinger to control unruly crowds. The cannon was served with water from fire hydrants via hoses and a high pressure water pump. However the experiment was not successful because it took too much time to couple the cannon with the hydrants and beside that, the Haflinger's mobility was affected when dealing with a crowd on the run. Haflingers were not only used by the Police, but also by the Fire Department and the Department for Agriculture and Fisheries. Sadly, I have no information about these.

Die Polizei experimentierte auch mit einem Wasserwerfer, der auf dem Haflinger montiert wurde, um Protestgruppierungen in Schach halten zu können. Das Wasser kam aus Hydranten, Schläuche und eine Hochdruckpumpe wurden ebenfalls am Haflinger mitgeführt. Das Experiment wurde jedoch nicht weiter verfolgt, da es zu lange dauerte, die Wasserversorgung zum Haflinger herzustellen. Außerdem war die Mobilität des Haflingers dann eingeschränkt.

A special thanks must definitely go to Ian Stenton, who used Haflingers and taught others how to use them at the Police Driving School. He provided me with the pictures you find below. Ian Stenton reports, that the Haflingers required a separate license due to the optional four wheel drive and differential locks of a type not found on other Police vehicles. The test incorporated off-road driving as well as the ability to set up the vehicle in different states.

Einen speziellen Dank möchte ich Ian Stenton aussprechen, der selbst mit Haflingern fuhr und in der Polizei-Fahrschule anderen die Bedienung beibrachte. Er stellte mir die Fotos aus seinem Archiv für die Website zur Verfügung. Ian Stenton erzählt, dass man für die Haflinger einen eigenen Führerschein benötigte, da sich das Fahrzeug hinsichtlich Allrad und Differentialsperren von anderen Polizeifahrzeugen unterschied. Die Fahrprüfung umfasste auch Geländefahren und das Auf- und Abplanen.

	This and the following picture must have been taken when the Haflingers were nearly new. The vehicles were painted in dark blue and had green canvas hoods. Dieses und das folgende Bild müssen aufgenommen worden sein, als die Haflinger noch fast neu waren. Die Fahrzeuge waren dunkelblau lackiert und hatten eine grüne Plane.
	Note the consecutive number plates on this picture! The vehicles were possibly imported to Hongkong via a Mercedes-Benz dealer named Walter Sulkie. Man beachte die aufeinanderfolgenden Nummern auf den Kennzeichen! Die Haflinger wurden wahrscheinlich von einem Mercedes-Benz Vertreter Namens Walter Sulkie importiert.
	Here you see a lovely group shot of Police Driving School vehicles. At that time, the Haflinger AM 8944 was stationed permanently at the Driving School (note that an additional Police Driving School tactical sign has been fitted to the front of the vehicle). Dieses Foto zeigt eine Fahrzeugaufstellung der Police Driving School. Zu dieser Zeit war der Haflinger AM 8944 fix dort stationiert (man beachte das zusätzliche taktische Zeichen, das auf der Front des Fahrzeuges montiert wurde).
	Another picture of the Police Driving School Haflinger AM 8944 at Tai O Police Station (on a small island in the western part of Lantao island). The Haf was able to make it up a small, steep pathway there. Ein weiteres Bild des Police Drivin School Haflingers AM 8944. Aufgenommen wurde es bei der Tai O Polizeistation auf einer kleinen Insel im Westen von Lantao Island. Der Haflinger befuhr dort einen schmalen, steilen Weg zur Polizeistation.
	This picture of a Ford Transit should help to imagine what the original color of the Haflingers would have looked like. Der links abgebildete Ford Transit soll nochmals als Beispiel für die Farbgebung der Polizeifahrzeuge dienen.

Sadly it appears, that all Police Haflingers were scrapped after their period of service. At the moment, I know of only one Haflinger in Hong Kong (see link below), but this one is a recent import from Australia.

Leider scheint es aus heutiger Sicht so, als ob alle Polizeihaflinger nach ihrer Dienstzeit verschrottet wurden. Überhaupt ist mir nur ein Haflinger in Hongkong bekannt, welcher aber erst kürzlich aus Australien importiert wurde (siehe Link weiter unten).

Hi. I am a collector in Hong Kong, I know many haflinger in HK between 60s to 70s, some service at Fire Dept at Island and some countryside.When i was a kid, i saw some 60s picture, Today only one 700 AP haflinger soft top in HK, it was import from Aus at 2003. This car not easy to Reg in HK, I use more than one year to talk with our Transport Dept.I know Japan Government also import handful haflinger at end of 60s.any one got a 5 speed 700 ap/703 ap with PTO please tell me. I need some spare parts for my 700 ap. my e mail kdfvw@yahoo.com

Hi, I was an Inspector in the Royal Hong Kong Police in the 70s & early 80s. When posted to Lantau Island, my Police Station (Mui Wo) had a Haflinger Police Vehicle. I used it a lot, but unfortunately it was coming to the end of it's life & needed a lot of maintaining. It was withdrawn from service in around 1979.
