Atacama 1961
This page is dedicated to the Atacama Expedition, which was led by Mathias Rebitsch in 1961. The mission of the expedition was to study ruins on top of the 6725 m high "Cerro Llullayacu"
in the Atacama region, and Steyr-Puch provided a Haflinger as a support vehicle. Detailed descriptions of the Expedition can be found via the links on the bottom of this page (in german, but you may use
Google Translator or similar to translate the text in the PDF files to english).
Diese Seite ist der Atacama-Expedition gewidmet, die 1961 von Mathias Rebitsch angeführt wurde. Ziel der Expedition war es, Ruinen am Gipfel des 6725 m hohen "Cerro Llullayacu"
im Atacama-Gebiet zu untersuchen. Steyr-Puch stellte hierfür einen Haflinger zur Verfügung. Detaillierte Beschreibungen der Expedition sind über die Links am Ende der Seite zu finden.

Note the extra belt which is going from the crankshaft pulley to the upper right corner of the engine room. This belt possibly drove the Root's compressor as a supercharger for better engine performance at big heights.
Note also the raised upper engine cover.
Hier ist der extra Keilriemen gut zu sehen, der von der Riemenscheibe auf der Kurbelwelle zum rechten oberen Eck des Motorraumes geht. Der Riemen diente wahrscheinlich für den Antrieb des Roots-Kompressors, der für
die Aufladung des Motors und somit für bessere Leistung auf großer Seehöhe sorgte. Man sieht auch, dass die obere Motorhaube hochgezogen wurde.

The base camp. Jacqueline recalls that Hias Rebitsch was usually typewriting in his tent until midnight, which was a bit annoying for the other participants.
Das Basislager. Jacqueline erinnert sich, dass Hias Rebitsch üblicherweise bis Mitternacht auf seiner Schreibmaschine schrieb, was für die anderen Teilnehmer etwas nervig war.

This picture sadly has a lower quality, but also includes Gerhard Watzl on the far right side.

Some anecdotes...
Jacqueline recalls that she once climbed the Llullayacu with her husband Gerhard and Luis Vigl up to a height of about 6600 m. From there, only Luis made the last hundred meters to the top.
The Haflinger once had a flat tyre in the middle of nowhere: The reason was a can opener on the desert soil.
Ricardo Mendieta wanted to kill a "Vicuna" with his rifle to obtain some meat. However Jacqueline threw his gun to the floor, destroying the sighting mechanism.
Luis Vigl would usually drive the Haflinger on the bad tracks and keep saying "Hold tight, we may tilt over every second!".
Ein paar Anekdoten...
Jacqueline erinnert sich, dass sie einmal den Llullayacu bis zu einer Höhe von 6600 m mit ihrem Mann Gerhard und Luis Vigl bestiegen hat. Von dort aus ging nur noch Luis zum Gipfel weiter.
Der Haflinger hatte einmal mitten im Nichts einen Platten: Als Ursache wurde ein Dosenöffner festgestellt, der am Wüstenboden lag.
Ricardo Mendieta wollte einmal ein "Vicuna" mit seinem Gewehr erlegen. Jacqueline schmiss das Gewehr allerdings zu Boden, sodass die Visiereinrichtung kaputt wurde.
Luis Vigl fuhr auf dem Weg zum Berg hinauf mit dem Haflinger und sagte dauernd: "Halte dich fest, wir können jeden Moment umkippen!"
